Folders force one answer to where something lives. Tags let an item live in as many answers as it earns.
Tags are in production
Claim: one item, many answers
A passport scan is travel and identity and family-admin, depending on the week. Folders demand one answer to where it lives; every other answer becomes a duplicate, a shortcut, or a memory. Tags skip the argument. One item carries as many labels as it earns, and each label is a live filter away.
Tags in NT² Vault just graduated from preview to production: on by default, with a tag hub for browsing, lifecycle filters that combine with search, and suggestions that arrive exactly when they are useful.
Suggestions at save time, not scoldings later
The best moment to label something is the moment you describe it. When you save an item that looks like a duplicate, the vault offers a tag instead of a lecture. When a document carries an expiry date, it suggests expiring soon so the checkup, search, and filters all see the same truth.
Every suggestion takes one tap to accept and one tap to dismiss — "not now" is a complete answer, recorded without sulking. Tags you never want stay never-used; the vault does not resurface rejected labels to wear you down.
Labels are data, not telemetry
A tag is a fact about your item, stored beside it and synced with it. Rename receipts-2026 to tax-2026 on one device and every device agrees after sync, because agreement is what sync is for.
What tags are not: they are not categories imposed from above, not engagement signals, not training data. Nobody at NT² can see your tag cloud, because there is no cloud that holds it — only your devices, holding the same encrypted rows.
